Who’d be a football manager? Not us after seeing what Thierry Henry has to go through…
The Frenchman had a wonderful career as a player – winning a load of titles at Arsenal and Barcelona, as well as the World Cup in 1998.
Henry achieved wonderful things as a player but life as a manager is proving to be more difficultgettyHe also scooped up a number of individual accolades, including the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award on two occasions.
Little went wrong for him when he was a player, but his managerial career has panned out somewhat differently so far.
After a productive two years working as assistant manager with the Belgium national team, he got the top job at former club Monaco but lasted only three months.
Henry, 43, is now in charge of MLS side Montreal Impact, a post he’s held since November 2019.
But a video posted by the league sheds brilliant light on how hard it is to be a manager these days.
Henry went through the motions during Impact’s defeat to NashvilleMLS
Who’d be a manager?MLSA microphone was attached to the Arsenal legend during Impact’s 1-0 defeat at home to Nashville on Tuesday and although Henry may have been a cool customer as a player, he was quite the opposite on the touchline.
It starts pretty well with Henry offering words of encouragement to his team. But that soon changed as he dug out midfielder Shamit Shone for taking too much time on the ball.
The video then cuts to Henry shouting at American forward Mason Toye before venting at his coaching staff.
An increasingly frustrated Henry then has a go at midfielder Amar Sejdic before telling Toye to be more vocal to teammate and former Tottenham star Victor Wanyama.
Henry warns Wanyama not to scream at ToyeMLS
This is how Henry reacted to a hairy piece of goalkeeping from James Pantemismls
Henry was close to losing control of his temper during the matchMLS
The game finished 1-0 to Nashville, much to Henry’s disappointmentMLSShone then gets more instructions thrown as does Sejdic.
As Impact’s chase for an equaliser gets even more tricky, Henry’s frustration is at risk of boiling over as he’s filmed shouting at goalkeeper James Pantemis and winger Romell Quioto.
And as he yells ‘Maxi! Arriba!’ to Argentine striker Maximiliano Urruti, the final whistle goes and there ends a wonderful insight into what every manager in the world experiences.
Maybe just buy the game Football Manager instead…
