Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere, three ex-Liverpool players and a World Cup winner… The free agents clubs could still sign after transfer deadline day

2 months ago 3

Deadline day may have happened, but in truth, the transfer news and rumours will never stop.

Deals can still happen – the transfer window remains open in some foreign leagues while the EFL window doesn’t close until October 16.

The likes of Ismaila Sarr, Said Benrahma and Josh King could leave their clubs soon

And there are of course unattached players who can be signed at any time.

talkSPORT.com has picked out NINE stars who currently find themselves at a loose end and could be picked up in the coming weeks.

Danny Welbeck

The former Manchester United and Arsenal man may have signed a three-year contract at Watford in August 2019 but he is now available on a free after his Vicarage Road contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

Welbeck has bags of Premier League experience – he was a title winner at United – and also has 40 England caps to his name.

However, he’s never been a prolific goalscorer despite being a striker and is somewhat injury-prone these days.

Jack Wilshere

Welbeck has had his problems, they don’t come a lot more injury-prone than Wilshere, another ex-Arsenal star.

The midfielder has suffered another setback with West Ham terminating his contract.

He was billed as a future superstar when breaking through at Arsenal but persistent injuries have ruined his career and his options have shortened despite being just 28 years old.

Wilshere has been linked with a move to MLS while also jokingly teasing a shock transfer to non-league Hitchin Town recently.

Daniel Sturridge

His career has suffered a real nosedive since an investigation into an alleged breach of betting rules was opened into him back in 2019.

Sturridge was later let go by Liverpool before suffering a four-month ban from football after being found guilty. His contract with Turkish club Trabzonsport was subsequently terminated.

The striker’s ban ended in July, however, he is still clubless. Anyone thinking of signing him will undoubtedly be put off by how susceptible he is to picking up injuries. When on the pitch though, there’s no denying he knows where the goal is and , at 31, he still has something to offer.

Nathaniel Clyne

Sturridge’s former Liverpool teammate Clyne is also a free agent right now, however, it looks like his future will be sorted very soon.

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson confirmed last week the club are lining up a deal for the full-back, 29.

Clyne started his career at Selhurst Park and has been training with the Eagles in recent weeks.

Fabio Borini

Sturridge and Clyne at least had their moments at Liverpool but Borini never settled in at Anfield, or any of the eight clubs he’s been at in his career for that matter.

But at 29, the Italian still has more to give and is looking for somewhere to play after his contract with Hellas Verona ended in the summer.

Mario Gotze

Germany won the 2014 World Cup thanks to Gotze’s well-taken winner in the final and it was expected the then-Bayern Munich star’s career would only go from strength to strength. Sadly, it’s not turned down that way.

He moved back to Borussia Dortmund in 2016 but health problems led to him losing his place in the team before leaving at the end of last season. Like Wilshere, Gotze has also been linked with a move to America.

Samir Nasri

He may have two Premier League winners’ medals to his name but Nasri’s career has been nowhere for years. He had spells in Turkey, Belgium and at West Ham after eventually leaving Manchester City in 2017.

It was actually an old City teammate of his, Vincent Kompany, who offered him a career lifeline by signing him up at Anderlecht last summer. The 33-year-old’s contract hasn’t been extended and it’s hard to see how many takers there will be for him.

Oumar Niasse

Not long ago, Niasse was Everton’s main attacking threat. But after the Toffees announced he’d be leaving back in June, the striker has struggled to find a new club.

The last we heard about the Senegal international was for all the wrong reasons as he caught driving with three friends during the UK’s coronavirus lockdown in March.

Mario Mandzukic

He may have countless league titles, domestic cups, a Champions League winners’ medal and even a World Cup final goal to his name, but Mandzukic is at a loose end right now.

Okay, he’s 34 years old, but the Croatian striker may fancy one last hurrah before he finishes what’s been a stellar career. There are surely plenty of clubs he could do a job for.
