Diogo Jota scores 10,000th goal in Liverpool’s history but Reds hit by Fabinho injury setback in Champions League win

Diogo Jota netted the 10,000th goal in the history of Liverpool Football Club as the Reds beat FC Midtjylland 2-0 in the Champions League at Anfield.

His strike, an easy tap-in, was a nice salute to the scorers of the previous 9,999 goals but the team’s performance was a long way off the high standards that some of the great Liverpool sides produced during the club’s illustrious 128-year history.

The goal was a rare moment of quality as Liverpool carved open the Danish minnows ten minutes into the second half with Xherdan Shaqiri finding an unmarked Trent Alexander-Arnold in the box with a neat reverse pass.

Alexander-Arnold looked up and gave Jota the simple task of putting the ball into an empty net as he found the Portuguese with a low cross from the right.

That looked like it was going to be the winner but Liverpool got an almighty let-off in the 90th minute as Anders Dryer’s chip only hit the side-netting after the Midtjylland star did well to fox Joe Gomez.

The result was sealed in stoppage-time as Mohamed Salah blasted in a penalty after the Egyptian was fouled by Evander.

The win and a draw between Atalanta and Ajax’s leaves the six-time winners in charge of their Champions League group with a maximum six points.

However, there were plenty of negatives to take from the sluggish performance, with substitute Roberto Firmino missing a sitter late in the game.

But in even worse news, another player has joint the Liverpool treatment table, with Fabinho coming off in the first half after pulling up with a hamstring injury.

The Brazilian had been standing in at centre-back for Virgil van Dijk, who’s a long-term absentee and now Liverpool only have one recognised senior player with experience in that position.
