Some 30 people have been hospitalised, including six children who are fighting for their lives, after swimming at a Russian pool treated with 250 times the safe amount of chlorine.

Most of those poisoned were school aged kids who had been swimming at the Dynamo public swimming pool in Astrakhan, in southern Russia.

The incident led to a total 30 hospitalisations with chlorine vapour poisoning, 21 of who were children, according to the Astrakhan Region Branch Press Office.

Six of the kids in intensive care are in a “grave condition” and have been given oxygen support, said Anastasia Krotova, a spokesperson for the region’s governor. They suffered from breathing and eye problems, according to reports.

A criminal investigation into the poisonings has now been launched by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. They’re probing the management of the pool, according to multiple reports.

Multiple reports claim staff responsible for cleaning the facility allegedly may have made an error that led to the poisonings. Video from the pool shows investigators in orange hazmat suits in the pool area taking readings.
