‘Howler’: Lyon’s sad confession on prodigy

Australian spin bowler Nathan Lyon has conceded West Australian young gun Cameron Green was robbed of a maiden first-class double-century by an umpiring “howler”.

Green compiled a classy 197 against the New South Wales Blues during a Sheffield Shield clash in Adelaide last month.

But the 21-year-old’s mammoth innings ended in controversial circumstances, given LBW on a Sean Abbott delivery which appeared to be bouncing over the stumps.

Lyon bowled 47 overs in the match, snaring the wickets of Ashton Agar and Aaron Hardie.

Speaking to Fox Cricket on Sunday, Lyon said Green was bitterly unlucky to be denied a chance to bring up his maiden double-century.

“He got an absolute howler,” Lyon said. “I wish he had the DRS, young Greeny.

“You talk about Cameron Green to a lot of people around Australia and they think his bowling’s better than his batting. He must be a bloody good bowler, because he was very, very impressive with bat in hand against New South Wales down in Adelaide.

“What I love about Cameron is he’s a really nice, young kid. He wants to learn, he wants to get better, so it’s a great prospect for Australian cricket.

“It’s exciting to see all these young kids put their hand up for selection.”

Green was in contention for an international debut after Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis suffered a side injury during the first ODI against India on Friday.

But national selectors opted instead for the services of New South Wales veteran Moises Henriques for Sunday’s match at the SCG.

“It is about the make-up of the side and the overs that Moises can give us at the moment,” Australian captain Aaron Finch explained at the toss.

“Cam has been bowling a little bit, but hasn’t gone to that next level in the amount of overs has bowled just yet.”

Green boasts a formidable record in the Sheffield Shield, averaging 49.83 with the bat and 22.52 with the ball.

He was awarded for his impeccable domestic form by being named in Australia’s Test squad for the upcoming four-match series against India.
