Inter Milan were knocked out of the Champions League group stage for the third consecutive season on Wednesday night following a goalless draw with Shakthar Donetsk, who were also eliminated.

Antonio Conte’s men mustered just four shots on target during a night to forget at the San Siro, typified in the closing stages when Alexis Sanchez’s goal-bound header was inadvertently blocked from going in by Romelu Lukaku on the line.

The German side qualified as runners-up after the aforementioned duo’s scoreless draw.

Atletico Madrid are through to the last 16 after a 2-0 victory at Red Bull Salzburg, thanks to goals from Mario Hermoso and Yannick Carrasco.

The Spanish side finished second in Group A behind holders Bayern Munich, who rounded off their group campaign with a 2-0 home success against Lokomotiv Moscow.

Second-half goals from Niklas Sule and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting extended Bayern’s unbeaten run in the competition to an impressive 17 matches.
