The debate for who is the GOAT in UFC and thus MMA is an eternal one.
However, now that Khabib Nurmagomedov has retired from the sport undefeated at 29-0, it’s time to take stock of where the Russian really stands.
Khabib Nurmagomedov immediately retired after UFC 254Getty Images - GettyOf course, the 32 year old deserves to be in the conversation. With a 12-0 run in UFC, only Anderson Silva had a longer unbeaten run.
Now that Khabib says he doesn’t want to fight anymore without his late father – whom passed in July – and has promised his mother this will be his last fight, we’ll never know how far he could have taken that record.
Jon Jones, who is also firmly in this discussion, says he is the GOAT ahead of Khabib because the Russian only had four title defences compared to Jones’ 15.
Khabib left his gloves in the octagon following his victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 and after the event, UFC announcer Jon Anik discussed his greatest fighters of all-time.
‘DC’ – a former two-weight champion – retired a legend this yearGetty - ContributorAnik made his picks in front of Daniel Cormier – former light-heavyweight and heavyweight double champion – and he left DC out!
On top of that, he picked Cormier’s arch-nemesis Jon Jones as his number one greatest! Wow, Anik has some guts.
“Boy, you love guys that have bad (drug) tests,” Cormier told Anik. “I don’t know what’s gonna come out on Jon Anik later. I mean, he’s got Anderson Silva and Jon Jones on this list!”
Anik’s list read Jon Jones, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Georges St Pierre, Anderson Silva and Amanda Nunes, in that order.
In response to Cormier, Anik said: “So I did give some love to Anderson Silva, because uh, because I did. Georges St-Pierre is gonna be the guy who is on all of these lists.
“I think Khabib really could’ve supplanted Jon Jones for me, but I’m just telling you: The most skilled, best fighter that I’ve ever seen in UFC history is Jon Jones. And, uh, that’s my list, and I’m sticking to it.”
There’s nothing wrong with Anik’s list in terms of pedigree, but Cormier is also right – there are some asterisks there!
