Hamilton went on to have the record all by himself at Portiamo with a comfortable victory ahead of his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.

The 35-year-old took the chequered flag for the 92nd time in his career and was 25.5 seconds ahead of Bottas.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen came in third place but Mercedes once again dominated the weekend.

Talking to his team shortly after the success, Hamilton said: “I couldn’t have done this without all of you.

“Thanks so much for continuing to believe in me and striving for perfection, it’s an honour to work with you.”

Hamilton is also closing in on his seventh World Championship and is currently 77 points clear of Bottas with just 130 points left to play for.

The British driver would equal Michael Schumacher’s record of seven titles in the sport.
