Liverpool have officially opened their new £50million training ground in Kirkby.

The state-of-the-art complex is called the AXA Training Centre and replaces their Melwood base, which housed Liverpool players for 70 years.

The new development includes three full-size pitches, goalkeeping and warm-up areas, along with two gyms, a sports hall, pool, hydrotherapy complex and specialist sports rehabilitation suites.

The gym is three times the size of the Melwood one, while the medical areas are twice as big.

And the door leading to the first-team suite is hilariously called ‘The James Milner Door’.

Liverpool shared a video of the new training complex with the caption: ‘A new era begins’.

Last week, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher paid an emotional tribute to Melwood.

He told talkSPORT: “It was basically a mess when Bill Shankly came in 1959 and revolutionised it.

“It has to keep progressing and moving forward, but it wasn’t until people started sharing stories that I got emotional.

“It was like being a kid again, I went there for the first time in 1987 as a nine-year-old and I was there ever since.

“The memories and the things that I went through. I remember David Beckham scoring a free-kick when I was in the A team!

“Playing in the famous staff games, the staff never lost a game in 70 years. If they were getting beaten, they just kept on playing until they won.

“It would be next goal wins and if they couldn’t find it, they’d start cheating.

“It was always a great mentality, it was about winning, winning has always been the biggest thing at Liverpool.

“I’ve got great memories there, I’m sorry to see it go, but the place they’re moving to will be as good as anything in world football.

“It’s great to see all the pictures and memories. I love the place.”
