Patrice Evra questioned why Manchester United signed Donny van de Beek as the Netherlands international sat on the bench for their goalless draw with Chelsea.

Van de Beek cost £40million from Ajax but is yet to start a Premier League game for the Red Devils.

The 23-year-old was a key member of the Ajax squad who reached the Champions League semi-finals back in 2019 and is thought of as one of the countries brightest young talents.

Former United goalkeeper, and Ajax director of football, Edwin van de Sar urged them to ‘take care’ of the player and even compared him to Paul Scholes.

But his rare involvement has questioned why he was signed in the first place while the Dutch club are not missing him as they won 13-0 in the Eredivisie on Saturday.

Evra told Sky Sports: “I have nothing against the kid but why have we bought Van de Beek? He’s watching the game in the stand every game because we don’t need him.

“That’s the truth but people will not say it aloud.”

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink added: “You are spot on. He’s an attacking midfielder, his strength is getting in the box and getting at the end of things and scoring goals or creating like (Bruno) Fernandes.

“If he has to compete with Fernandes he’s not going to play is he?”
