Pochettino reached the Champions League and League Cup final and guided Tottenham to a second-placed Premier League finish, but failed to win silverware during his five-year spell in north London.

The 2008 League Cup was the last piece of silverware Tottenham lifted – and Pochettino is desperate for Mourinho to change that this season.

He told Sky Sports: “It was an amazing journey, one we enjoyed a lot. We feel sad to not provide to the club and fans, and because that group of players deserved, a trophy.

“I hope in the future with Jose, it will be possible to win a trophy because it would be amazing for the fans and this group of players, the majority who were with us.”

Pochettino continued: “Only what I can do now is support because I still have a very good relationship [with the club].

“And of course, the man who replaced me is a good friend and a manager who treated me very well when I was at Espanyol and he was at Real Madrid.

“I remember a Champions League game against Ajax and we were talking in his changing room at the Bernabeu and the delegate comes in and says, ‘Jose, the game is going to start, we need to go out’.

“Only what I can wish to Tottenham, because I love Tottenham and because I know Jose and want the best for him, is to try to win.

“The journey, of course, we need to win a title. That is true. That is what we missed… to put the cherry on the top of the cake.”
