US election: Trump and Gaga's war of words

Trump and Gaga's war of words

Meghan Markle will make history by voting in the US election.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, will make royal history today by becoming the first to vote in a US election.

While Meghan and Harry famously quit royal duties earlier this year and moved to Los Angeles where they have been holed up during the coronavirus pandemic, the couple remain members of the royal family.

Royals traditionally don’t vote out of a commitment to political neutrality, however Meghan and Harry have been increasingly willing to enter political territory, recently urging people to vote in the US election despite Prince Harry admitting he had never done so himself. The move sparked widespread backlash in Britain and calls for the couple to be stripped of their titles in the US.

It comes as US polls open and celebrities take to social media to share pictures of themselves voting.

James Corden has taken aim at Donald Trump, creating a three-minute video that recaps his presidency. Trump also unleashed on celebrity Biden supporters, including Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Jon Bon Jovi in a final campaign rally outburst.

Lady Gaga publicly hit back with some choice words of her own to say about the President during an emotional speech at a Biden rally in Pennsylvania.

“And to all the women, and all the men with sisters and daughters and mothers… everybody, no matter how you identify: Now is your chance to vote against Donald Trump, a man who believes his fame gives him the right to grab one of your daughters, or sisters, or mothers, or wives by any part of their bodies.”

To drive the point home, she later tweeted a clip of that section of her speech directly to Donald Trump:

Meghan to make royal voting history

Victoria Craw

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, will make history by becoming the first royal to vote in the US election today.

A source told US media: "I'm not going to get into methods or timing, but can confirm that the duchess is voting in this election."

The Californian Duchess has urged voters to get involved in a video filmed with Prince Harry as part of a Time 100 series that sparked anger over their 'interference' in politics.

Pictured: Meghan and Harry before they quit the UK for LA life.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have taken on hate speech and negativity on social media while holed-up in their California mansion during the pandemic.

However urging the public to vote proved a step too far for some, particularly considering Prince Harry admitted he had never voted in his native Britain as part of the royal commitment to political neutrality.

In the Time video message, Meghan called the presidential race the “most important election of our lifetime”.

It led to calls from US Republican Jason Smith for the couple to be stripped of their titles.

Have you done your early voting yet? I know Everything is starting to feel pretty heavy this week… I’m sure you all feel it too… make sure you take time for yourself and don’t forget to do some deep intentional breathing every so often to calm your nerves. Take a walk with music. Give yourself a hug. Talk to your friends and family about how you feel. Hopefully change is coming. Tomorrow is the official Election Day for our new president. Please be on the right side of history. There is only ONE party that will be receptive to the work and advocacy that the thought leaders of our generation , and past generations have been fighting for. Beyond anything , this election is about getting a racist, misogynistic , xenophobic, frankly disgusting man out of office. This past year during the pandemic, we have all had a chance to sit with ourselves and really think. What kind of America do we want to live in? For our children to group up in? I want to live in a welcoming, respectful, helpful, smart, responsible and kind America. What we’re living through right now, under Donald Trumps presidency, is the exact opposite. He won’t even acknowledge his wrongdoings or the evil that is infiltrated and has permeated through the systems and certain groups/people in America. Because he believes in them! He knows that the people that support his racism and hate, will give him a vote , so he could never condemn them. He approves. It’s sick. There is so much to say , but just know, this is one of the most important elections to date. The feeling of standing up for what you believe in, having strength within your decision and knowledge . Then going out and VOTING to express that decision, could quite possibly be the best feeling in the world! We are just individual pieces of a very large puzzle, but each puzzle piece counts … including yours!!! We are standing up now so the children, grandchildren and next generation, OUR future Bosses, Teachers, Artists, Leaders never have to feel oppressed by anything or anyone. Who will be effected if you don’t vote? Think about that. Vote for empathy. Vote for science. Vote for a not blatantly criminal, racist president and VP. Vote

We take it that's one for Biden then.

Kanye votes....for himself

Victoria Craw

Kanye West has taken to social media to declare he voted for a trustworthy candidate in the 2020 election….himself.

"Today I am voting for the first time in my life for the President of the United States, and it's for someone I truly trust…me," he wrote, alongside an emoji of a US flag and a dove, symbolising peace.

God is so good 😊 Today I am voting for the first time in my life for the President of the United States, and it's for someone I truly trust…me. 🇺🇸 🕊

The rapper-turned-candidate also declared he channels Will Ferrel (sic) at "daddy daughter dances," whatever that means.

Kanye announced his candidacy earlier this year however it was marred by emotional outbursts in which he said he and Kim Kardashian West considered an abortion before having their daughter North, and later filmed himself urinating on his Grammy awards.

Corden's 'brilliant' three-minute Trump video

Stephanie Bedo

Talk show host James Corden has delivered a last minute anti-Trump message to viewers.

The Late Late Show with James Corden star recapped four years of Donald Trump's four-year presidency in three minutes.

The clip was shared on the show's Twitter account highlighting all the Trump moments that have made headlines.

Corden ended the video saying, "think about the country you want to live in".

"And if looking at polls makes you break out in hives, then vote tomorrow and we can move on with our lives," he finished.

It would be impossible to recap it all for you, so you're going to have to watch the clip.

In case you were lucky enough to miss a single moment of Trump's presidency, @JKCorden is here to recap the last four years in just three minutes. pic.twitter.com/M6jgHNUXQS

— The Late Late Show with James Corden (@latelateshow) November 3, 2020 https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Fans on social media labelled it "brilliant" and "genius".

One person tweeted, "Trump really f**ked us over for 4 years didn’t he… god can the nightmare end already".

Another said there was enough material it could have been a full hour special.

But not all reaction was supportive, with some saying Corden wasn't funny, to go back to the UK and that elements of the video weren't true.

John Legend has thrown shade at fellow musicians who have supported Donald Trump while performing at a Biden and Kamala Harris event today.

Sitting at his piano, he told the crowd: "Now, some people see the meanness, the bullying, the selfishness of Donald Trump and they mistake it for strength, a kind of twisted masculinity.

"Some see his greed and they mistake it for being good at business."

John Legend put some rappers supporting Trump and their Platinum Plan into a locker.

"Some of your former favorite rappers have been taken in by these lies," Legend continued.

"I think they even founded a new supergroup, it's called the Sunken Place," he said in reference to the Jordan Peele movie Get Out.

"But Trump's Platinum Plan for Black folks is nothing but fool's gold, because you can't bank on a word he says," he added, referring to the proposal outlining promises to the Black community revealed by the Trump administration last month.

He ended his address by calling the president "a coward".

His sledge comes after rapper Lil Wayne tweeted a photo from a meeting with Trump about the proposal last week.

Just had a great meeting with @realdonaldtrump @potus besides what he’s done so far with criminal reform, the platinum plan is going to give the community real ownership. He listened to what we had to say today and assured he will and can get it done. 🤙🏾 pic.twitter.com/Q9c5k1yMWf

Ice Cube has also seemingly supported Trump, with the President thanking the musician and actor for working with the White House to discuss the needs of the Black community.

Eminem backs Biden with rare song licensing

Isabella Fowler

In a first for the hip hop artist, Eminem has allowed the use of his Oscar-winning song “Lose Yourself" in Joe Biden’s presidential campaign.

The singer, real name Marshall Mathers, offered the work for a 45 second black and white video called "One opportunity", referencing the iconic opening lyrics.

He tweeted the clip with a simple message to fans: “One opportunity… #Vote”

Mathers is among a number of musicians who have allowed the use of their music in Biden campaign spots, including Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen and Beastie Boys.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign has received a number of legal threats and requests to cease using music from artists including the Rolling Stones and the family of Tom Petty.

Lately, he's opted for Village People’s “YMCA” at rallies.

That group’s lead singer, Victor Willis, told the BBC last week that he did not endorse Trump “nor has the Village People,” but blanket licensing laws allow him to “play our music anytime he wants to at any venue.”

Gaga's emotional speech: 'Vote against Trump'

Nick Bond

Lady Gaga gave an impassioned and at times emotional speech during a Joe Biden campaign rally in Pennsylvania today.

"Now is the time to show up and vote like this country depends on it, because it does. Vote like your life depends on it, or your children's lives depends on it, because they do.

"Vote for Joe. He's a good person. Thank you."

Just to make sure the message wasn't lost, Gaga then tagged Trump in a clip of the video on the President's favourite social media platform, Twitter.

Simpsons' last-minute Trump jab

Nick Bond

In the Simpsons Halloween episode which aired in the US over the weekend, Homer is shown hesitating in the polling booth to the horror of daughter Lisa, who reminds him of “all that’s happened over the past four years”.

Homer then mulls over a rolling list of dozens of Donald Trump's most infamous moments:

Just a few of the points that scroll quickly across the screen: “Paid $750 in taxes, said to swallow bleach, withdrew from the WHO, called white supremacists ‘fine people’ and tweeted classified photo of Iran missile site.”

“Pft, who you gonna make fun of now late-night comics,” Homer laughs as he votes, presumably for Joe Biden.

Donald Trump has unleashed on celebrity supporters Biden Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Jon Bon Jovi in a bizarre campaign rally outburst.

Of rocker Jon Bon Jovi, who had hosted a pro-Biden concert in Pennsylvania last month, Trump said:  “Jon Bon Jovi, every time I see him he kisses my ass. ‘Oh, oh, Mr. President.’ But he’ll get to get something out of it, just like everyone is.”

“But you know what happens? He’ll sing a song or two, and then he will leave, and the crowd will leave and sleepy Joe is up there talking,” Trump continued.

Oh, and just to show there truly is a Trump tweet for every occasion, here he was in 2010:
