Melbourne teen reunited with classic first car after it was stolen

A stoked Melbourne teenager has been reunited with his first car after the classic Toyota was stolen from outside his house last week.

Montmerency teen Levi Charles, 17, had bought the vintage 1979 Toyota Corolla to fix up with both of his grandfathers while he learned how to drive.

But their plans hit a roadblock when the car was stolen from Sherbourne Road in Montmorency in Melbourne’s northeast between 4am and 6am on October 27.

Fortunately, the crook had a change of heart and after a tip off from a good Samaritan the car was found dumped in the Eltham area on Friday night.

Levi told 3AW radio on Monday he was “rapt” to get the car back.

“I got phone call from (the police) and I was just in disbelief, I was rapt about it,” he said.

“It was kind of getting to that point where it would be a pretty low chance of coming back, but I guess low chance is better than nothing.”

Levi said the car was not too badly damaged and only a few things from inside the car, such as the radio, had been stolen.

“It doesn’t look too bad, better something getting taken and getting my car back,” he said.

Levi said he would now be keeping it locked up and within sight at all times so it doesn’t get taken again.

He said his grandads were also happy to get the car back and they would keep working on it until he gets his licence – when he turns 18 in May next year.

“I just thought I’d buy a bit of an older car because I’m into that kind of stuff and do it up with my grandpa and pa to just try and get it back to what it used to be,” Levi said.

Police said they were still trying to track down the person who stole the car and urged anyone with information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
