Ole Gunnar Solskjaer next? David Moyes AND Jose Mourinho were both sacked by Manchester United following defeats on Merseyside as Red Devils prepare for Everton clash

Manchester United travel to Everton this weekend in dire need of a victory following a dreadful week in which the pressure has piled on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Last Sunday’s 1-0 home loss to Arsenal – which extended United’s worst start to a Premier League season in seven years – was followed up by a 2-1 humbling by unfancied Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League.

The woeful performance in Turkey was as alarming as the result, which has ramped up the pressure on Solskjaer and increased talk over his possible sacking.

In fact, talkSPORT understands former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has already been sounded out by Old Trafford chiefs over potentially becoming the next Manchester United manager.

Solskjaer’s fate may now rest on United’s next match, which takes place on Saturday lunchtime with full commentary of their clash vs Everton LIVE on talkSPORT!

The Toffees enjoyed a brilliant start to the Premier League campaign, but they’ve recently come crashing back down to Earth with back-to-back defeats by Southampton and Newcastle.

Nonetheless, they will be confident of taking all three points from the Red Devils, especially after watching United’s recent performances.

Heading into the match Solskjaer is surely in last chance saloon and, if history is anything to by, the trip to Goodison Park could be his last as Manchester United manager.

Two of Solskjaer’s predecessors, David Moyes and Jose Mourinho, were axed by United following defeats on Merseyside, with the former sacked after a loss at Everton and the latter dismissed upon losing to Liverpool at Anfield.

Solskjaer would be retreading Moyes’ footsteps even more specifically if he is sacked after a Goodison Park defeat this weekend, as the Scot had also lost an away Champions League fixture in his penultimate game.

Famously, an individual dressed as the Grim Reaper was in the Goodison Park stands on the day of Moyes’ final match – and it was an ill omen concerning his fate.

Despite all the rumours of Solskjaer’s possible sacking, Bruno Fernandes is not buying into the negativity – nor, it appears, are the United hierarchy right now – and the midfielder is confident of turning things around.

“I think of course after two defeats it’s hard to think or say something about this,” the Portuguese said when asked about confidence being knocked.

“But I think we need to look one week ago. Everyone was talking about we’re going well, we’re doing amazing games.

“We won against Newcastle, we won against Paris, we beat Leipzig. We draw against Chelsea in one game when we can win.

“But of course the points we have in the league is not the points we want.

“Today was important for us winning the game to be comfortable in the table. And, of course, making one or a few points again we (would have almost) passed the group.

“But now it’s the same, we need to do the same: going for every game, trying to win, and it will not be different now in the Champions League.

“We are in a good position. Of course in the league we are not in a good position – we all know that.

“We need to do much better, and we need to do something more than say ‘do something in the next game’ already because it will be a difficult game for us. Our focus now needs to be already there.”
