Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be sacked if Manchester United fail to win anything this season, talkSPORT has been told.
The Red Devils have made a rollercoaster start to the campaign, switching between diabolical and sublime on a weekly basis.
Expectations are high at Old Trafford and the club may not accept another trophyless seasonAFP or licensorsUnited turned on the style in the second-half to beat West Ham 3-1 on Saturday, but only after going behind during a dreadful opening 45 minutes – and that has largely been the story of their season so far.
The Red Devils face a date with destiny on Tuesday night, needing to draw at RB Leipzig to get out of their Champions League group – with full commentary of the huge European clash LIVE on talkSPORT.
It’s certainly not panic stations at Old Trafford just yet, with United five points off top spot with a game in hand, and with the odds in their favour to get out of a tricky European group.
Nonetheless, talkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy argues that Solskjaer must deliver a trophy this season if he wants to keep hold of his job.
United reached three semi-finals under the Norwegian last season, and Murphy compares the Red Devils right now to Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, before they started winning things.
Man United were rubbish in the first-half but electric in the second against West HamAFP“It’s a bit like Liverpool,” Murphy said on Monday’s White and Jordan. “Klopp was getting to finals and people were enjoying it, but it gets to a point when people think, ‘Come on, enough now’.
“Then bang, they won the Champions League and the Premier League title. He’s produced.
“It’s very simple. If Solskjaer doesn’t win anything this season, he will be gone.”
One man who can guide United to success almost single-handedly is Bruno Fernandes.
So much depends on Fernandes for UnitedGetty Images - GettyNot for the first time, the Portgual superstar inspired United to victory at the London Stadium on Saturday, coming off the bench at half-time and transforming the match.
And Murphy, like most of us, is a huge fan of the 26-year-old.
The former Liverpool midfielder added: “He’s got that wonderful attribute of taking the ball in dangerous areas on the pitch and making things happen.
“He’s not scared of making mistakes. Too many players these days are obsessed with numbers and stats, keeping possession and how it’s going to look.
“Fernandes plays free, he’s a game-changer and he’s a ‘wow’ player.”
