Premier League sack race: Steve Bruce odds plunge after Newcastle cup exit, while Mikel Arteta favourite as Arsenal woes continue

6 days ago 1

The pressure continues to mount on Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

The Gunners are without a domestic victory since November 1.

Arteta is under increasing pressure a year into his Arsenal reignAFP

They are sitting just four points above the Premier League relegation zone after eight defeats in 14 games, and were hit for four at home by Manchester City on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Slaven Bilic became the first managerial casualty of the Premier League season when he was sacked by West Brom last week.

And Arteta is the bookmakers’ favourite to next suffer the same fate as Bilic, just one year after he replaced Unai Emery in north London.

It does not get any easier for Arteta or Arsenal with a Boxing Day clash with Chelsea to come. Another defeat could spell the end for the Spaniard.

Chris Wilder is the bookies’ second favourite to lose his job with his Sheffield United side yet to win a Premier League match this season.

It is looking bleak for Sheffield United, who have managed just two points from 14 games.

They almost got that elusive first win on Sunday as the ten-man Blades were denied by an 87th-minute Danny Welbeck goal in a 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Steve Bruce, meanwhile, is also finding himself under increasing pressure and has seen his odds on being the next boss to go plunge.

Newcastle fans are frustrated by the football being played under Bruce and results have been poor in recent weeks.

They were sent crashing out of the Carabao Cup by Championship side Brentford on Tuesday night, which followed a 1-1 draw with ten-man Fulham and a 5-2 humbling at the hands of Leeds.

Somewhat surprisingly, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains among the top five favourites in the sack race despite United’s recent impressive league form.

The Red Devils extended their unbeaten Premier League run to seven games with a 6-2 victory over Leeds on Sunday.

United will move to within just two points of leaders Liverpool if they win their game in hand.
